Sidney graduate Fagerlund enters Colorado prep shrine

AURORA, Colo. — Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) has honored the state’s top contributors to high school activities for the past 24 years.

On January 23, the CHSAA Hall of Fame inducted seven more individuals who have helped shape the growth of the organization. Although most members are retired, several continue to serve the students with a youthful enthusiasm.

Among those elected to this year’s class is 1973 Sidney High School graduate Pam Fagerlund, currently head volleyball coach at Flagler (Colo.) High School.

Fagerlund holds the Colorado record for most wins by a volleyball coach.

Her overall record through 29 years is 562-195, a 74.2 winning percentage.

Her teams are 69-21 (.681) in state tournament play, winning four state championships and six second-place fishes. Flagler has made 22 state finals appearances in Fagerlund’s reign.

Along with coach Fagerlund, Flagler volleyball players have earned many prestigious awards. Seven players have earned Player of the Year honors and 40 have received All-State recognition.

Many players continue to play in college and in the professional levels. Fagerlund also coaches junior high volleyball and track.

With only seven or eight girls, her junior high volleyball teams have been known to upset many team twice their size and power. Her teams are easily recognized for their sound basic skills and tough defense.

Fagerlund has taught business education classes at Flagler for the past 31 years.

Her classroom reveals the same time and dedication as does her volleyball program. Fagerlund also serves as the yearbook adviser and is a dedicated club adviser to the school’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) group. Her FBLA members also excel at the state and national levels.

Fagerlund is the daughter of Glen and Betty Fleming of Lorenzo.

She and her husband Randy began their teaching and coaching careers at Potter High School.

The couple has two children: daughter Sheryl, a business teacher and volleyball coach in Colorado, and son Daniel, an assistant football and basketball coach /assistant athletics director at a junior college in North Dakota.

Fagerlund was one of the seven inductees for the CHSAA Hall.

Others inducted were NBA player Chauncey Billups, current Nebraska Athletic Association Executive Director Rhonda Blanford-Green, the “shot doctor” Duane Lewis, the “voice”- sports announcer Frank Palmeri, basketball referee Jim Dorsey, and longtime basketball coach Joe Strain.

The inductees join the 149 members who represent many years of outstanding leadership, outstanding citizenship, and the ideals embodied by the CHSAA.
