From the Sidelines

Time for last call from the sideline

From the day I accepted my first newsroom position back in 1984, I realized there would be good times and bad.

That said, this column blends the two, marking the final edition for yours truly at the Sun-Telegraph, as I have accepted the sports editor’s position at the Rawlins (Wyo.) Daily Times, and will begin there Tuesday.

The opportunity popped up a few weeks back, and the move seems to be one that will head me in the right direction.

When I came on board here in January 2012, my responsibilities were in the news slot.

Former sports writer Matt Palmer resigned in mid-September, I decided to slide back into sports, with a few news items on the side.

Not going to get long-winded here, other than to say than it’s been a pleasure to be able to live and work in Sidney.

The thanks are many, beginning with former publisher Sue Mizell. At the time I interviewed for a slot here, I had already been offered a job in Hartington, in the northeast corner of the state.

I was hoping I could be closer to my girlfriend by being hired in Sidney.

Sue gave me an opportunity when there were certainly other options, and for that, I am deeply indebted.

There are many others to thank, particularly Sidney city manager Gary Person. Gary was invaluable in my transition here, and without his help, I’d probably still be totally lost.

On the news side, there are many more who deserve a mention. Cheyenne County Attorney Paul Schaub and his office always kept the lines of communication open; Sheriff John D. Jenson kept me apprised of goings-on in the county, and his office, namely Mel Plummer, was always cooperative when it came to getting information or a mug shot to us.

Deb Hume and the gals at the District Court offices consistently provided court documents to us in a pinch.

On the sports side, many deserve thanks.

A special word of appreciation to Craig Maas in Potter, and Donna Wiedeburg and Joe Arterburn in Sidney, for their photo assistance during basketball.

With their help, we were able to provide pictures from two to three venues each game night.

Thanks to all the coaches, athletics directors and school secretaries for their cooperation through the months, and to the players for their efforts. Leyton’s run to the boys state basketball tournament was one that won’t be soon forgotten, and Lane Harvey sinking three free throws to win the game for Sidney, with his ailing grandfather present, was a special moment.

And last, but not least, a tip of the cap to my co-workers at the Sun-Telegraph. Thanks to everyone for making me feel at home here.

As I turn the page on my career, let it be known that Sidney has a lot going for it, and I enjoyed every moment.
