Sidney trash race collects tons of garbage

The Great Trash Race that was held in Sidney on May 4 was a couple of tons of success.

The participants collected 244 bags of trash, which equaled 4380 lbs. or 2.19 tons of trash. Keep Sidney Beautiful recycled a half ton of metal from the event. This is up nearly one ton from last year’s race which had a total of 1.46 tons.

The race is a part of Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Clean Up campaign. The goal of the race is to clean up litter in the community of Sidney and to educate the citizens of Sidney on reducing, reusing and recycling.

The first-place team was from UPS and they donated their prize back to Keep Sidney Beautiful. Second-place went to the Cabela’s Retail HR and General Outdoors departments. Third-place went to Sidney’s Girl Scouts of America.

Other teams who participated were ATA Martial Arts, Cub Scouts of America, Jim Rehrauer, Rotary, Golden Living Center, Sidney High School, Legendary Impressions, Ladies’ Chamber, Legendary Impressions, Office of Human Development, Saunder’s Construction, Sidney Sun-Telegraph, TE Connectivity and the Keep Sidney Beautiful Board.

Each participant received a free t-shirt and a free lunch of hotdogs, chips, Pepsi products and cookies provided by Sidney’s Community Development Department, Pepsi-Cola and Cakes & Creations. Runza donated free ice cream coupons to everyone who participated as well.

A variety of door prizes were awarded to lucky ticket holders whose numbers were drawn.

“It was a beautiful day for the event,” said Cheryl Jones, director of Keep Sidney Beautiful. “We couldn’t have done this without Sidney rallying behind us. We had 45 sponsors for the Race and over 150 participants come out to make it a great success. Thank you to everyone for putting your heart into Keeping Sidney Beautiful.”

The organization added a “Strangest Find” category to this year’s race. If participants found a strange item along their route, they were asked to take a photo and send it digitally to KSB. The winner of the strangest find went to Cub Scout Pack #90. They discovered a plastic doll head with one missing eye.

Several companies and organizations contributed funds to the effort, as well, including Cabela’s, Cheyenne County Chamber, Cheyenne County Visitors’ Committee, Sidney Economic Development, Financial Partners, Sidney Regional Medical Center, Pepsi-Cola, Runza, Sidney Sun-Telegraph, and Wolf Auto Center, Cakes & Creations, McDonalds, Points West Bank, Saunders, WalMart, Adam’s Industries, American National Bank, Cheyenne County Community Center, Dairy Queen, Hillside Bar & Grill, Hillside Golf Course, Katie Haas-State Farm, Miller Office Products, Randy’s Automotive, Sidney Federal Savings and Loan, Western Nebraska Community College and Western Drug, Arby’s, Best Western Plus, Bomgaars, Golden Living Center, Great Western Bank, Hampton Inn, Larry’s Clothing Store, Randy’s Auto Care, Reganis Motors, Rood’s Tires, Ricky & Lucy’s Greenhouse, Sauder’s Automotive, Sidney Girl Scouts, Sonny’s Super Foods and US Recycling.
