Annual garden walk set for Saturday

Interesting landscaping, flowers and greenery will be abundant during the Cheyenne County Ladies Chamber garden walk this year.

"We have quite a variety," said Ladies Chamber member Norma Long.

The annual walk will take place this Saturday, July 12 from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants on the walk can tour seven area gardens in addition to the library garden, where the walk commences. The garden walk is a self guided tour, but the owners will be present to tell participants about the plants, flowers and other greenery located on their property.

"It's fun to go and look at them," Long said.

Those interested in the walk can buy advance tickets at the Sidney Public Library for $6 or the Cheyenne County Chamber office or at the library on the day of the walk for $8. Participants can pick up their tour booklet at the Sidney Public Library on the morning of the walk.

The number of participants in the walk varies from year to year, Long said.

The Ladies Chamber finds the homeowners to participate in the walk through phone calls from neighbors and from driving around the community. Sometimes the chamber members simply see a yard that looks nice from the front and learn that the backyard is just as charming.

"Sometimes it's a nice surprise when you see the backyard," Long said.

Those showing their yards in the walk include Jeff and Louella Pippitt, Dennis and Lana Speer, James and Cathy Powell, Keith and Nancy Rexroth, Kathy Merritt, Ed and Kelly Nelson and Ed and Gloria Wilson.

In case of rainy weather, the walk will be postponed until the following Sunday afternoon, July 13 from 3 to 6 p.m.

Proceeds from the walk will partially fund the Ladies Chamber Western Nebraska Community College scholarship. This is a $500 scholarship given to an area high school senior planning to attend WNCC. The chamber also uses funds from bake and sidewalk sales to contribute to the scholarship.
