Sidney girls lose twice over weekend

The Sidney High School girls' basketball team fell to the talented Sterling High Lady Tigers on Saturday night, 51-40.

The Lady Raiders to fell to 2-3 on the season.

The Lady Tigers brandished a full-court press that gaveSidney huge problems causing numerous turnovers.

"They have good athletes and good length," said Sidney coach Tyler Shaw. "They do a good job anticipating passes and passing lanes. There were times when we attacked them well and there were times when we got a little passive and telegraphed our passes. That usually turned unto trouble for us.

"We just have to do a better job next time, anytime we see a full court press we need to be aggressive, make solid passes and make sure we meet the ball."

Savanna Rosenbaum gave a great effort, scoring 11 points on 4-for-4 shooting from the field. Kelsey Knight also had 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the field.

Sterling got of to their usual fast start in the first quarter. They are averaging 15.3 points per game in the first quarter this year. The Lady Tigers, a potent offensive team that is averaging 55.3 points per game, were up 32-19 by halftime.

The Lady Raiders showed great resilience as they entered the fourth quarter only down by 10 points, 39-29. They held the Lady Tigers to only seven points.

Strong efforts by junior Knudson and sophomore Kylie Chavez helped the Lady Tigers eventually pull out the win. The tandem combined for 27 points.

The Lady Raiders next face off against the Alliance on Thursday night at 5:30.

"We play at Alliance next week," Shaw said. "That's always a tough place to play. They have a lot of size with very very tall girls. We're going to probably have to try to speed up the game a little bit. We need to make sure we box out a get more rebounds and do a better job than we did tonight at times."

Alliance enters the game with a 1-4 record and a two-game losing streak at home. Both teams score around the same amount of points, with Sidney averaging 35.8 points per game and Alliance scoring 36.6 points per contest.

In its other game this weekend, the Lady Raiders lost 48-29 on the road to Chase County.
