Sidney wrestlers capture Chase Co. Invite crown

Vowers, Robb, Muggli win individual titles in 16-team event

Energized by three weight-class wins and 10 top-four finishes, the Sidney Red Raiders proved best of the 16 teams that competed in the Chase County Invitational on Saturday.

The Raiders first-place total of 209.5 points was 12 better that Sedgwick County's 197.5. Gordon Rushville (168.5), Bayard (143) and Bridgeport (133) rounded out the top five. The Raiders will meet second-place finisher Sedgwick County (Colo.) in a dual meet on Thursday in Julesburg.

Leading the way for Sidney were Kaden Vowers (106), Derek Robb (138) and Michael Muggli (145), who each went undefeated on the day to win their respective weight classes.

After receiving a bye in the first round, Vowers won three straight matches to claim his title. He topped Mitch McKibbon in the championship match 4-0 after having pinned two prior opponents.

Robb continued his unblemished record of success with four pins. In the championship match, he required just 57 seconds to send Joe Weibert of Bridgeport to the second step on the podium. No one could go the distance with Muggli either as he disposed of three opponents by fall and one by technical fall. Bryson Fisher of host Chase County finished second after Muggli defeated him by technical fall when the score reached 17-1 4:15 into the match.

The Raiders also picked up valuable points with eight other podium finishes. At 113 pounds, Colton Peckham reached the championship match before being defeated by Alex Araujo of Bayard by major decision, 11-3.

Sidney had four third place finishers including Jack Feddersen (126), Zach Borges (160), Brandon Lulf (195) and Dominic Beyer (285). Cody Hofrock lost a close decision (3-1) in the third-place match against Bryan McGahan from Hershey. Brett Jaggers also finished in fourth place after a record of 4-2 on the day.

The Raiders road match with Julesburg is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
