Farm Bureau president makes stop in Sidney to discuss property taxes for farmers, ranchers

More than 50 people turned out to listen to Nebraska Farm Bureau President Steve Nelson discuss the organization's strategy for supporting legislation to reduce property taxes for farmers and ranchers on Monday night at Buffalo Point Restaurant.

"Nebraska farmers and ranchers account for less than 3 percent of the states population, but now pay nearly 30 percent of the total property taxes collected statewide," Nelson said. "There are several bills that can be supported to address the property tax issue."

Nelson discussed four bills and how the farm bureau believes they would serve as the foundation for tax relief.

He said the state senators will be the ones who ultimately will decide what happens with these bills for change, but it's up to the farmers and ranchers to get the word out about the message.

"It's going to take work to get state senators to support this," Nelson said. "We can win on these issues, but we're going to have to work hard."

Nelson also fielded a question-and-answer session from locals about the logistics of these bills and ways to overcome and address the property tax relief issue.
