BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Leyton boys, girls swept

The Leyton High boys’ basketball team dug itself into a big hole in the first quarter and couldn’t recover on its way to a 66-42 non-district loss to Sedgwick County (Colo.) on the road Tuesday night.

Though the Warriors (9-8) played the Cougars (9-4) nearly even over the final 24 minutes, they couldn’t extricate themselves from a 23-6 first-quarter deficit.

Cody McKay led Leyton in scoring with 15 points while Drew Brenner was close behind with 13. McKay and Kenny Ernest topped the rebounders with five apiece while point guard James Rushman had five assists and a pair of steals.

Leyton will challenge local rival Creek Valley in Chappell on Friday with a tip scheduled for 7 p.m.
