BOYS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Peetz picks up two victories over weekend

The Peetz Bulldogs boys basketball team won a pair of 1A North Central League games over the weekend to up their league record to 7-2 and 10-5 overall.

On Friday night at Carlile Gymnasium, the Bulldogs dominated the second half on their way to a 79-47 win over the Briggsdale Falcons (1-15, 0-8).

On Saturday at Weldona, Colorado the Bulldogs turned back the Weldon Valley Warriors 57-41. The Warriors record has dropped to 4-14 on the season with a 2-7 league mark.

Casey Barrett hit eight 3-pointers for 24 points to lead the Bulldogs in scoring in the win over Briggsdale. Freshman Logan Sircy dropped in 11 points while Cody Wilson added 10 and Bradey Holtz nine. Jordan Nelson topped Peetz on the boards with nine rebounds while Holtz added six boards, five assists and two steals. Holtz was also perfect in four attempts at the foul line. Wilson had three steals and a pair of blocks. Despite foul trouble, Garrin Cox scored eight points.

"Once again a slow start to come out of the gate," said Bulldogs' head coach Jim Gardiner. "Another good league win, but plenty to imporve on and keep pushing forward."

Though Peetz had its least productive scoring quarter over the first eight minutes, the Dogs still opened with a 14-6 lead. Barrett drained a three pointer at the halftime buzzer to extend the Bulldogs advantage to nine points at 33-24.

The Bulldogs broke open a 24-24 haltime tie with a 33-17 scoring advantage in the second half to win going away against Weldon Valley. Barrett again led the way in scoring with 17 points to top a list of four in double figures. The others included Jordan Buss (12), Cox (11) and Wilson (11). Sircy had six assists and three steals while Wilson had nine boards and Cox eight.

"A sluggish first half turned into a good defensive second half as we pulled away," Gardiner said. "Jordan Buss came off the bench to spark us offensively and Casey (Barrett) found a streak to lead us to victory."

Peetz will cross the state line to meet local rival Potter-Dix on Tuesday in a 7:30 p.m. start.

Leyton 62, Creek Valley 49

The Leyton Warriors upped their season mark to 10-8 with a 62-49 win over local rival Creek Valley (3-11) in Chappell Friday night.

The Warriors took the lead by six (13-7) after the first eight minutes and never looked back. Drew Brenner hit on six of nine 3-point attempts to post a team-high 23 points. Cody McKay (17 points), Zach Hellie (10) and James Rushman (10) also hit for double figures. Brenner and Hellie added to their offensive production with six assists apiece. McKay swiped three balls on defense and led the team with nine boards.

Brett Godfrey and Colin Brott topped the Storm's scoring list with 15 and 11 points respectively. Gage Koenen contributed eight points and Dane McConnell seven. Koenen also had a solid night on the boards with seven rebounds. Godfrey had four assists and three steals.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday night with the Warriors traveling to Bayard for a 6:30 p.m. contest with the Tigers. The Storm will be on the bus to Grant to meet Perkins County at 7 p.m.

Garden Co. 51, Potter-Dix 46

The Potter-Dix Coyotes lost a tight game at Garden County 51-46. The loss dropped the Coyotes to 5-11 on the season while the Eagles upped their mark to 5-9.

The Coyotes are next in action on Tuesday when they host Peetz in Potter. Game time is scheduled for about 7:30 p.m.
