CLASS D-2, SUBDISTRICT 11 TOURNAMENT: Minatare tops Leyton in finals

McKay paces Warriors with 17 points in losing effort

The Leyton High Warriors boys' basketball team had its season come to an abrupt end in the Class D2-11 subdistrict finals with a 53-40 defeat to the Minatare Indians on Thursday night at the Cabela's Athletic Facility in Sidney.

The Warriors finished their season with a record of 12-10 while Minatare advanced to 20-2. The Indians have just one game standing between them and a state championship berth. Minatare will now face Cody-Kilgore in the district final on Tuesday in Hyannis.

With the end of their season, the Warriors now say a reluctant farewell to three seniors who started all season. Cody McKay, Jared Westman and James Rushman will graduate this spring.

The Warriors fell behind by three points (13-10) after the opening quarter and trailed the rest of the way. The scored reached 28-19 by the half. The Indians padded their lead by an additional five points in the second half.

McKay, the Warriors leading scorer this season at 16.4 points per game, finished the game with 17 points with Zach Hellie chipping in nine and Drew Brenner seven.

McKay also pulled down 10 rebounds while Rushman had four assists and a steal.
