Sidney's Arellano wins wrestling medal at OSU

Trey Arellano, who will enter his freshman year at Sidney High School this fall, won the gold medal in the 106-pound weight class at the Oklahoma State University Technique Camp late last month.

For Arellano, it's the fourth straight year he has attended one of the OSU wrestling camps and the first year he has come home with a medal. Only the winner of each weight class is awarded a medal.

"He wrestled four matches and beat them all, and that's a big accomplishment with the kind of competition they get there," said Sidney Wrestling Federation coach Steven Vach. "The OSU camps are among the best in the country and run by a great coach in John Smith."

Smith, a two-time Olympic medalist and four-time world champion, has been at the head of the Cowboys' program since 1992. When wrestlers arrive at Smith's camp, they weigh in and are paired with groups in their own weight class. At the end of the four-day camp, the students are organized into brackets.

"He really wanted to come home with a medal this year," said Trey's father, Travis Arellano. "If you lose once, you're out of the tournament, and this is the first year he has been able to win all his matches."
