Peetz comeback falls short

Though Jordan Nelson rushed for 198 yards and Wolf Wenneker threw for 306, the Peetz Bulldogs football team came up just short against the Arickaree/Woodlin Indians on Friday, 58-50.

Arickaree (1-0), the defending six-man state champions, jumped on the Bulldogs (0-2) early to take a 34-12 halftime lead. The Indians then ran the opening second-half kickoff in for a touchdown to go up 40-12 before the Bulldogs mounted a rally. Arickaree was outscored 38-18 after the second half kickoff.

"At halftime we said we weren't going to quit," said Bulldogs head coach Scott Sorensen. "In six-man, being down by 20 points is not a big deal. But letting them score four or five times in a row really put us behind the 8-ball."

Nelson piled up his ground yards on just 19 carries while Wenneker completed 12 of 17 passes for a completion rate of better than 70 percent. Wenneker's favorite target was junior Cody Wilson who hauled in seven passes for 205 yards.

Cole White had two receptions for 46 yards. Nelson, who had a pair of catches for 30 yards, also competed a pass to Wenneker that went for a 30-yard gain.

Nelson, a middle linebacker, topped the team on defense with 17 tackles, including 13 solo. Three of his takedowns were sacks. Wilson had 13 tackles while Garrin Cox had 12 and Wenneker 10.

"I told all the guys that I was proud of them for not quitting," Sorensen said. "Really, we just ran out of time."

The Bulldogs will return to league play on Saturday when they travel the road to Briggsdale for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
