Lady Raiders lose in three sets at Chase County

Leyton wins pair at Garden Co. triangular

Sidney High School lost to Chase County in straight sets – 25-17, 25-20, 25-21 – in volleyball action on Tuesday.

The Lady Raiders fell to 3-5 this season, while Chase Co. improved to 9-1.

Sidney freshman Payton Jung recorded 13 kills and a pair of aces, while teammate Emily Mahr had 20 assists and 10 digs.

The Lady Raiders only managed a hitting percentage of .154 for the match with 18 errors.

Sidney also received a nine-dig effort from Kelsey Knight, eight kills from Maddi Porter and five kills and three blocks from Annalise Lecher.

The Lady Raiders return to action on Saturday when they play in the Aurora Tournament. Besides the hosts, other teams participating are Crete, Waverly, Beatrice, Concordia, Central City and Lakeview.

Leyton picks up two wins

at Garden County triangular

Leyton’s volleyball team improved to 10-1 this season after winning a pair of matches at the Garden County triangular. The Lady Warriors defeated Bayard in three sets (25-23, 24-26, 25-14) and took care of Garden Co. in straight sets (25-9, 25-18).

“You could definitely tell we had come off a long string of volleyball games last week,” said Leyton head coach Jodi Craig. “After having played a dual on Tuesday and Friday, and the Bridgeport Tournament on Saturday, we were a little sluggish in our first match tonight.

“It was a great match with Bayard,” Craig added. “We simply missed too many serves throughout the match. We have to make good teams earn their points by cutting down on unforced errors.”

In the win over Bayard (3-7), the Lady Warriors received balanced attacking from several players. Kristine Barnett had eight kills, while Diedra Waite and Cheyenne Nickel added six piece and Natalie Cruise contributed five.

Waite added six blocks in the match, while setter Taylor Berner had 25 assists.

The Warriors had a much easier time with Garden Co. (1-11).

Hope Dykman and Barnett had six digs each, and Waite provided three blocks. Nickel had a team-high three kills in the match and Berner contributed eight assists.

“We came out strong against Garden County, attacking the ball and serving aggressively,” Craig said. “We were able to keep them out of system for much of the match, which is a sign we are moving well and being disciplined on the court. Overall, we had a solid night of volleyball.”

Leyton is back in action Thrusday afternoon when it hosts a triangular with Hay Springs and Mitchell.

Creek Valley goes 1-1

at Sutherland triangular

The Storm lost in straight sets to Sutherland (25-18, 31-29), but bounced back to sweep Perkins County (25-16, 25-19) in the nightcap.

Joey Straber had six blocks, five kills and 12 digs against Sutherland for the Storm (6-4). Teammate Payje Misegadis contibuted 11 digs and three blocks, while Katie Burch had 10 digs, three kills and a pair of blocks. Setter Samantha Schmid had 12 assists in the match.

Against Perkins Co., Jessie Straber paced the Storm with seven kills and seven blocks. Misegadis chipped in 12 digs, four blocks, four kills and a pair of aces. Schmid added another dozen assists in the win.

Creek Valley next travels to Garden County for a match on Thursday.

Potter-Dix splits

Potter-Dix defeated Wauneta-Palisade in three sets (25-10, 17-25, 25-16) and lost to Paxton in three sets (24-26, 25-19, 25-20) to push its record to 6-2 this season.

The Lady Coyotes host the Potter-Dix Invite on Saturday. Particpating teams are: Potter-Dix, Morrill, Crawford, Sedgwick County (Colo.), Burns (Wyo.) and Pine Bluffs (Wyo.).

Peetz falls to Briggsdale

The Peetz volleyball team lost in straight sets to host Briggsdale, 25-17, 25-16, 25-13.

The Bulldogs fell to 0-9 this season, while Briggsdale improved to 7-2.

Mikenna Curlee led Peetz with nine kills, while Jodie Schumacher added four. Schumacher added 12 digs and teammate Cami Thompson contributed 10.

Abby White, Katie Buss, Curlee and Schumacher all registered aces for the Bulldogs, who return to action Saturday at Deer Trail.
