Potter-Dix posts first win of year, tops South Platte

POTTER – The Potter-Dix High School's football team got its first win of the season in style.

The Coyotes jumped out to the early lead and went on to defeat visiting South Platte for a 54-20 win on Friday night.

"Friday night was mostly just about our team finally getting close to healthy," said Potter-Dix head coach Dale Frerichs.

South Platte got on the scoreboard first, but Potter-Dix quickly came back to take an 8-6 lead in the first quarter. The Blue Knights went up 12-8 in the second quarter, before the Coyotes came back for a 16-12 lead. The Coyotes got their final first half score on an over-the-shoulder grab by Kelsey Rozelle on a pass from Noah Nelson as the clock struck zeroes and the Coyotes took a 24-12 advantage into halftime.

Potter-Dix dominated the third quarter of the game with an aggressive offense and a tight defense, scoring twice while never letting South Platte into the end zone.

The Coyotes had all the reason in the world to be feeling confident as they ended the third quarter and entered the fourth with a massive 26-point lead on the Blue Knights, the scoreboard reading 38-12.

The Coyotes outscored the Blue Knights 16-8 in the fourth quarter.

Rozelle finished with 140 yards and the two TDs on 13 carries, while Nelson racked up 62 yards on 12 attempts.

Nelson completed 9 of 14 passes for 110 yards and two scores. Rozelle caught five passes for 83 yards and one TD.

Defensively, Coby Hicks had 18 tackles for the Coyotes.

The win was the first for Potter-Dix this season as the home team improved to 1-6. South Platte fell to 2-4 with the loss.

The Coyotes wrap up their season Friday with a 7 p.m. contest at Leyton.
