Leyton defeats Potter-Dix, earns berth in state playoffs

The Leyton High School football team downed Potter-Dix 36-14 on Friday night and earned a spot in the Class D-2 state tournament.

The Warriors (3-5) will travel to square off against Garden County on Thursday in the first-round of the 32-team Class D-2 state playoffs. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Garden County – the No. 2 seed in the West Division – downed the 15th-seeded Warriors 70-24 on Oct. 16.

On Friday night, Leyton opened up a 14-0 lead during the first quarter. Potter-Dix managed to tie the game 14-14 in the third quarter, but the Warriors scored the game’s final 22 points.

Leyton quarterback Rhett Dye completed 11 of 14 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for one touchdown.

Kordell Maestas carried the ball nine times for 107 yards and a touchdown. On defense, he registered nine tackles.

Zach Hellie had five catches for 151 yards and a touchdown for the Warriors and teammate Morley Haley added a touchdown catch.
