Students help celebrate Nebraska's 150th birthday

Leyton Elementary School Students across the county celebrated Nebraska's 150th Birthday by participating in events Wednesday afternoon.

At Leyton Elementary School, kindergarten through sixth grade students rotated through seven hands-on stations that represented something about Nebraska..

The seven stations included topics and hands on exercises that encompassed, old fashion games, Nebraska snacks, branding and roping, map activities, crop production, history and fossil education, hunting and fishing, and quilting and butter making.

Leyton Elementary teacher Shirley Melton said "our local power company helped with the branding and roping station. Each child got to use an electric branding iron and brand their own board. We also had several roping dummies for the students to practice their roping skills on."

In the school's gymnasium students utilized a giant floor map of Nebraska to locate trails and landmarks on.

For a sample of Nebraska's farming and ranching, local farmers came to visit with the students about the types of crops grown in Nebraska, and what it takes to make them grow.

Park rangers from Agate Fossil Bed National Monument talked to the students about Native American history and fossils.
