Sidney battles to the end in state tourney play

LINCOLN - Sidney's Lady Raiders overcame a disastrous second quarter to place themselves in contention for the second round of the state basketball tournament Thursday.

Playing Norris in the first round, Sidney led 7-6 after one quarter of play in a defense-heavy contest. Sidney's hopes appeared dashed when the Titans put up 11 points to just two by the Lady Raiders in the second eight minutes of play.

If hope was lost, the Lady Raiders didn't know it, battling back to within one point approaching the end of the third period.

Norris extended its lead back to six points in the last quarter, but Sidney hung on with its tenacious defense and moved to within one shot, 39-36, when Katelyn Sylvester hit both attempts on a two-shot foul with seven seconds left to play.
