Former long-time board chair retires from NRD

Former South Platte Natural Resource District (SPNRD) Board Chair Keith Rexroth has retired after more than two decades.

In 1972 the Nebraska Legislature enacted laws to combine 154 special purpose entities into 23 NRDs. NRDs are local government entities with broad responsibilities to protect natural resources. The entities are unique to Nebraska. The SPNRD services an area from Kimball County to Deuel County in the southern Panhandle.

Rexroth has been a SPNRD board member since 1993, the long-time chair gave his resignation earlier this year.

"Early in his tenure, Keith made the commitment to be informed and committed to the NRD," SPNRD General Manager Rod Horn said.

Durning his tenure, Rexroth was credited with creating ways to sustain the region's natural resources and navigated the NRD through many changes.

One example of Rexroth's commitment to sustaining natural resources including developing an Integrated Management Plan (IMP) which will help protect water resources into the future.

NRD officials say the IMP, in which Rexroth played an intricate part in developing, implements a local "Integrated Surface Water/Ground Water Plan" that has an acceptable degree of certainty in maintaining sufficient water supply for use by present and future generations. By maintaining and protecting the region's agricultural economy and the viability of the area, the IMP promotes economic growth while seeking to avoid adverse impacts on the environment.
