Sidney's Porter plays on winning All-Star team

Sidney High School graduate Maddison Porter played on the winning team of the 2017 Nebraska Coaches Association Volleyball All-Star match Tuesday, July 25, in Lincoln, Neb.

Sidney Raider coach Sarah Wilson was chosen as head coach of the 14-member Red Team, on which Porter played. Brad Reichmuth of Papillion-La Vista South was assistant coach.

Porter, a 2017 graduate, was a four-year varsity starter for the Lady Raiders, playing libero as a freshman and outside hitter during the following three seasons. Wilson was her coach for all four years.

The NCA All-Star selection process begins late in the volleyball season when each member coach has the opportunity to nominate senior student-athletes.

According to the NCA, once nominations are received, an evaluation form is sent to all member coaches who rate the players they have seen play, based on attitude and all-star potential. NCA's goal is to select players who represent the best student-athletes in all parts of the state, as well as representing the sport and themselves in a positive manner. Evaluations are tabulated and results presented to the selection committee, made up of coaches throughout the state.

All-Star coaches are selected in a similar manner, with the advisory committee members nominating peers. The coach's record, career stats and longevity are taken into the consideration, according to the NCA.

"It was an honor to be selected for the all-star game," Porter said. "I was nervous at first, thinking about playing at that level, but once I got there I had fun and made friends with the other players. And I think I represented Sidney well in the match."
