Creek Valley Split Perkins Contests

Creek Valley's Storm basketball teams hosted the Perkins County Plainsmen Tuesday, and the games results followed the pattern that Creek Valley has experienced in recent years when they face the Plainsmen.

The Lady Storm (9-8, 3-2 in district) looked to make it seven straight victories against the Lady Plainsmen (2-17, 0-5 in district), and jumped out to a fast 13-6 lead after the first quarter, with senior Sami Schmid powering the Lady Storm's offense with eight of her 17 total points coming in the opening eight minutes. The Lady Plainsmen fought back through the second period, and stayed in the game only trailing by nine, 27-18 at the half.

Perkins County hung with the Lady Storm through the third period, putting up eight points in the stanza to the Lady Storm's 12, but their tough defense came at a price, and the Lady Plainsmen had three of their starters foul out, leading to a fourth quarter where Creek Valley outscored the visitors 24-13 to end the game with a final score of 62-39, the Lady Storm's second consecutive game breaking the 60 point barrier.

"The girls once again played lights out and dominated the boards. Tonight everyone was on fire which made it very hard to defend us," said Creek Valley head coach Missy Koenen.

Senior Sami Schmid led the Creek Valley offense with 17 points, and senior Payje Misegadis and junior Jordyn Koenen both scored 11 points in the victory.

In the boys game, the Storm (8-9, 3-3 in district) looked to reverse their fortunes against the Plainsmen (12-7, 4-2 in district) to whom they had lost the previous 10 of 11 contests. This game started very slowly for both teams, with both squads struggling to score and ending the quarter with a 6-5 score in favor of the Plainsmen. But the Perkins offense heated up in the second period with the Plainsmen outscoring the Storm 18-6 to take a 24-11 lead into the intermission.

The second half continued with the Plainsmen outscoring the home team, and the Storm were never able to mount a serious challenge in the game. Perkins outscored Creek Valley 33-19 in the second to earn the victory with a 57-30 final score. Creek Valley junior Tanner Crass led the scoring for the Storm with 10 points in the loss.

On Friday, the Storm is scheduled to host the South Platte Blue Knights in Chappell.
