Open Mic Night: Keeping Sidney Beautiful

The fourth Open Mic Night hosted by Keep Sidney Beautiful was well attended on February 28 at Beans & Steams Coffee House. "There's a lot of talent here in Sidney and this event just keeps getting bigger and better," Sandra Buckner, Executive Director of KSB had to say.

The first performer of the evening was no stranger to the Open Mic stage, Michelle Haun, Educational Director for KSB, read a few of her own original works about rising up and out of hard times and romance. She then ended her performance with a reading of her first publicized poem.

Next up, Christopher Webb performed his original music on multiple instruments, a flashy clear guitar with light features, an autoharp and double neck 12 string guitar. He began his set with the first song he ever wrote titled "Freedom," an instrumental interlude between sung songs consisted of his version of "Hallelujah" on the hand held harp, finishing with a touching song dedicated to his friend called "Wingman."

Setting himself apart from the spoken word poetry and musical performances of the night was Trevon Newmann, owner of Modern Moves - Fitness and Dance Studio in Sidney, with his interpretations of stylized dance which brought the crowd to cheers.

Derk DeMasters, a newcomer to the Open Mic stage, next performed his version of "Midnight Express" on the guitar, "for years my wife has suffered from my music, now it's your turn," DeMasters joked as he began to strum his instrument.

Our very own Sidney Library Director, Amanda Eastin, was next up to the mic with her performance of "Watch What Happens" from the every popular Broadway musical Newsies. Sporting pink character heels featuring bows, she certainly showcased the genre well and in style.

Another guitar aficionado, Travis Bryson, a regular to the Open Mic set list played an instrumental piece. "I just like to play guitar," he said as he began to play.

Last but not least, KSB Executive Director Sandra Buckner grabbed the mic for her twist on country classics such as: "Things Are Tough All Over," "Grandpa," "Jealous Bone," and an encore of "Walkaway Joe." She encouraged everyone to sign up for the community clean up which will be scheduled as soon as weather is more consistent.

All members of the community as well as surrounding areas are welcome to sign up and perform for Open Mic Night, it is also FREE for all to attend. KSB keeps updates regarding this event on their Facebook page where they also live stream all Open Mic performances. The next Open Mic Night will take place March 22 starting at 5:30pm at the Coffee Corner located at 936 10th Avenue.
