TALKIN‘ TRASH: Proper Waste Removal By Jessica Kaiser jkaiser@suntelegraph.com SIDNEY - It’s that time. Snow blowers and shovels used for tedious snow removal have been put away while mowers and rakes have been pushed into service for tedious yard waste removal. As summer fast approaches the chores of summer - mowing, aerating, planting, pulling and weeding - all become a part of life. Knowing where to properly dispose of this waste will make these daunting tasks a much easier feat. City of Sidney Superintendent Rob Campbell said that during this time of year it is important for residents to dispose of their solid waste at the proper sites. “Trees and branches need to be taken to the landfill, not the compost pile,” he said. “We can’t burn within the city limits.” Larger trees and branches that the landfill crews can’t ground up are burned. Campbell said that any woody type of yard plant, such as rose bushes, should go into the tree pile and that grass clippings should be taken to the compost pile. Trees, branches and hard woods are not the only items that can be taken to the landfill. Campbell said that using the designated container to dispose of oil is the only and proper way for Sidney residents to get rid of that unwanted waste. In addition to yard waste removal, recycling options are also available. “There are two sites in Sidney,” Campbell said. Legion Park and the Safeway parking lot contain designated receptacles for recycled materials including plastic, metal and aluminum cans, mixed papers and cardboard boxes. The materials are organized, stored and then shipped to out to be recycled once a year. Campbell said there are about 30 to 40 bales of plastics that accumulate over the course of one year. The landfill’s hours of operation are from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 to 12 on Saturday. “We will be open until October this year,” Campbell said.
