| LINCOLN — The Sidney Red Raiders dropped a 67-55 loss at state as they battled the South Sioux City Cardinals hard for three straight quarters, but strong Card defense was the difference in the fourth with Sidney being eliminated from the state tournament. The Cards advanced to the semifinals and play the winner of the Adams Central-Ralston game today at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The Sidney boys finished with a strong 15-7 record as they were outscored 15-14 in the first quarter, but outscored the Cardinals 18-16 in the second quarter to enjoy a slender 32-31 lead at the halftime break. Sidney was outscored 18-16 in the third quarter and trailed by a single point, 49-48 going into the crucial fourth quarter. The Red Raiders were outscored 18-7 in the fourth quarter by the Cardinals as Sidney dropped the 67-55 loss. Sidney had four players scoring in double figures and were led by senior Bret Bayne, who scored 16 points along with three three-point baskets. Senior Matt Rosenbaum made 14 points and junior Colin Harvey scored 12 points, with four long range baskets. Junior Jeremy Tucker scored 11 points with three treys and senior Lance Christian made two points. Sidney used long range shots to make it a close game for the first three quarters, but couldn’t get many open three point shots in the fourth which was the difference in the game. Sidney shot well at the stripe, making 11 out of 15 free throws. The player of the game honor went to Bayne, who led the scoring with 16 points. Sidney was ready for the early morning game at state as they had three early morning practices. The Cardinals scored first but Sidney stole the ball and Matt Rosenbaum scored a basket, tying the game at two-all. Bret Bayne stole the ball and Sidney took a 5-2 lead. The Cardinals quickly scored to lead 6-5. Bayne hit a basket and the Cards struck right back to lead 8-7. Bayne hit a trey, the Cards answered back and the game was tied at ten. Bayne hit a free throw, tying the game at 11. Late in the first quarter the Cards scored and Bayne answered back with a three point basket, but Sidney trailed 15-14 as the first quarter ended. Sidney took a 20-15 lead in the second quarter on a pair of consecutive treys by Bayne and Harvey. The Cardinals used an explosive offense as they raced up and down the floor scoring quickly. Bayne made a free throw as Sidney led 21-17. Rosenbaum sank a pair of free throws but the Cardinals quickly took a 24-23 lead. Christian hit a field goal for Sidney and the Cardinals answered back with a layup. Tucker hit a trey and the Cards scored one of their own, so Harvey drained a trey late in the first half as Sidney led 31-29. Late in the first half Rosenbaum stole the ball and scored a layup, tying the game at 31. Rosenbaum was fouled and he sank one free throw, giving Sidney a 32-31 halftime lead. Harvey came back with a three point basket early in the third quarter as Sidney led 35-34. In the back and forth game, the Cards scored, Tucker hit a trey and the Cards made one of their own to lead Sidney 41-38. South Sioux City used a trap play which put added defensive pressure on Sidney. The Cards hit a basket and Christian scored as Sidney closed to a one point deficit as they trailed 43-42. The Cards scored two more treys towards the end of the third quarter extending thier led over Sidney to 49-45 with time running out in the quarter. Rosenbaum was fouled and made one free throw, as Sidney trailed 49-48 as the third quarter ended. Sidney used good defense to force the Cards to miss two quick shots and Luke Castner blocked a shot but the Cards had pulled away 53-48. Bayne made a free throw after he made a steal but the Cards led 55-49. Tucker made a pair of free throws as Sidney trailed 56-51 but the Cards used full court pressure on Sidney. The Cards scored again to lead 60-51. Rosenbaum was fouled and drained both free throws. Sidney trailed by nine points 62-53, but had trouble getting open for an attempt at a trey and the Cards ran time off the clock. Rosenbaum closed the game within nine points with a field goal and a free throw but the Cards kept scoring to defeat Sidney 67-55. Click Here To See More Stories Like This |
