Leyton Lady Warriors Use Strong Rebounding To Defeat Potter-Dix

DALTON – The Leyton Lady Warriors used strong rebounding and an active offense to defeat the Potter-Dix Lady Coyotes 52-31 at Leyton High School Tuesday.

Leyton started off strong, outscoring Potter-Dix 12-4 in the first quarter and 15-7 in the second.

Leyton enjoyed a 27-11 lead at the halftime break.

The Lady Warriors outscored Potter-Dix 14-8 in the third but Potter-Dix edged Leyton 12-11 in the fourth. Leyton took the 52-31 victory.

Leyton was led by Whitney Miller who controlled the boards and led the Warriors with 23 points.

Also scoring in double figures for Leyton was junior Whitney Armbruster who scored 10 points with four field goals and she made both of her free throws.
Also scoring points for Leyton were senior Shelby Waite who made six points, Sarah Brenner and freshman Tessa Lukesh scored four points each, sophomore Justine Peters made two points and freshman Rachael Ernest made a free throw for one point.

The Lady Warriors made 23 field goals and were hot at the stripe, sinking six out of 10 free throws for 60 percent shooting.

Miller led the rebounding for Leyton with 12 boards, Justine Peters had five steals and Sarah Brener led the team with four assists.

The Potter-Dix Lady Coyotes were led by junior Maranda Heitman and sophomore Tiffany LaBeau who each scored eight points. Heitman made two field goals, one trey and one free throw while LaBeau made three field goals and was two of three at the free throw line.

Also scoring for Potter-Dix were freshman Conner Wolff with five points, Dani Jones made four shots from the free throw line, Stephanie Mitchell and Amanda Maas scored two points each and Natoria Wheelock and Kristyn Barnes scored one point each.

The Lady Coyotes made eight field goals, one trey (by Heitman) and were 11 of 24 from the free throw line.

Leyton got off to an early start and built up a 6-1 lead on a free throw by Dani Jones. The Lady Coyotes player Heitman hit a three point basket but Leyton stretched their lead to 14-4 in the second quarter.

Jones sank a pair of free throws for the Lady Coyotes but Whitney Miller answered right back with two free throws of her own as Leyton led 22-6.

Lady Coyote Conner Wolff sank a free throw and Lady Warrior Rachael Ernest mad one also.

Wolff made a field goal and Ernest got a steal.

Wheelock sank a free throw for Potter-Dix and Lady Warrior Whitney Armbruster sank a pair of free throws.

On the next play, Armbruster nailed a field goal from the key giving Leyton a 27-10 lead.

Heitman sank a free throw for Potter-Dix late in the first half as Leyton led 27-11.

In the first half Whitney Miller scored a lot of baskets off inside passes.

She kept up the offensive pressure in the second half as she got a pass from Brenner and Miller scored a basket. They repeated that same play for two more points.  Justine Peters blocked a shot for Leyton who lead 33-11.

Lady Coyote Mitchell sank a pair of free throws and LaBeau took the ball the length of the court for a layup as Leyton led 33-15. Miller hit another field goal and Brenner scored on a layup. Brenner stole the ball.

Lady Coyote LaBeau was fouled and sank a pair of free throws. Wolff of Potter-Dix made a steal.

Lady Warrior Shelby Waite scored a field goal and Ernest got a rebound.

Whitney Miller scored a field goal for Leyton as they led 41-19 as the third quarter ended.

Lady Coyote Heitman caught a pass and scored early in the final quarter.
Waite grabbed a rebound for Leyton.

On the next play, Lady Coyote LaBeau took the ball the length of a court and scored a layup.

Jones sank a free throw for Potter-Dix but Sarah Brenner scored a layup for Leyton. Miller sank a free throw as Leyton led 46-26.

LaBeau knocked down a field goal for Potter-Dix.

On the next play Ernest passed the ball to Miller who scored a basket.
Barnes sank a free throw for the lady Coyotes.

The Leyton team seemed to handle the basketball better with less turnovers than Potter-Dix.

Lady Warrior sophomore Racheal Houk sank a field goal and Amanda Maas answered back for Potter-Dix with a rebound and a basket.

The Leyton girls took the 52-31 win over rival Potter-Dix.

In junior varsity girls action the game went over the three quarter regulation time with Leyton taking the 29-27 win in overtime.

The Leyton girls play in Minatare Friday and host Crawford at home Saturday.
Potter-Dix plays Banner County at Harrisburg Friday and hosts Minatare Saturday.
