| SIDNEY – If there is a near-constant need in western Nebraska, it’s workers for its workforce. This issue, and the issue of enhancing communities to attract, recruit and retain those workers, are primary concerns for the Western Nebraska Development Network. The network embarked on a strategic planning process last fall to address the common issues in western Nebraska communities, and now is ready to begin meeting with anyone who wishes to join them. The first meeting has been called for July 28 in Oshkosh. High Plains Compass Director Amanda Glenn said that western Nebraska, most commonly referred to as the Panhandle, represents 18 percent of the state. It encompasses 14,000 square miles and has a population of 90,000 people. The group aims to ensure critical support and participation from western Nebraska leaders, businesses, community organizations and residents; define and promote western Nebraska’s image and opportunities; and gain support and active participation of long-time and current citizens. The WNDN plans to begin its July 28 meeting in Oshkosh at The Mark Ferrari Specialty Coffee Roastery, where it will tour the business and receive a presentation on the statewide broadband household survey and learn what it means to the western Nebraska region. From there, the group will travel to Lewellen to tour the 17 Ranch Winery, lunch at The Most Unlikely Place and complete a business agenda. Glenn said membership is open to anyone who wants to get to know the service providers and what they have to offer, anyone with an interest in western Nebraska and to anyone who believes that by working together “we can do anything.” The network plans bi-monthly meetings throughout the year, traveling to various western Nebraska communities. A special meeting in August is planned to discuss the marketing plan, Glenn said.
