Every year on Jan. 1, millions of people vow to do something better, lose weight, quit smoking, be kinder to others and the list goes on. The new year creates the perception of a fresh start, and for many in Sidney, these resolutions offer the hope of bettering themselves in one way or another.

These same individuals also offered insight into what traditions they celebrate during the New Year’s holiday.

The Sidney Sun-Telegraph went out in search of Sidney residents to find out what their New Year’s resolutions are for 2010. This is what people on the street had to say.

“I purchased an electronic cigarette to help me quit smoking,” Carol Rowe said. She said she has been smoking for 30 years and wants to make another attempt to stop this new year.

Her plans for New Year’s Eve are to watch the ball drop with her husband.

Eighteen-year-old Ian Johnson said he shoots off fireworks to ring in the new year. He said he is going to try and limit soda this year as well.

Shannon Carver said she too is kicking the smoking habit and “wants to save more money.”

She also plans to spend a quiet evening at home with her husband tonight.
Larry Fraas said he doesn’t make resolutions because he always breaks them, but plans to spend his New Year’s Day at his store, counting inventory.

Margaret Meier said she would like to read more, and is looking forward to the New Year’s tradition of a family dinner and celebration with friends.

Avery Mika said she wanted to nicer to fellow co-workers, while co-worker Zane Hall said he wanted to enjoy reading and drink more coffee.

Melanie Klipfel said her resolution was to finish the second semester of high school with straight A’s and play in the championship volleyball game.

Her mother, Cindy Klipfel, said she wanted to fix up her yard this year.

Doris Jensen said she wants to get more exercise and plans to do a puzzle on New Year’s Eve like she has in recent years.

Sarah Bacon said she doesn’t have a resolution, but enjoys watching the ball drop.

Eileen Nightingale said she has always watched Dick Clark’s New Year’s Eve special and “wants to be more organized this year.”

Vickie Morlock said she wanted to quit smoking and plans to enjoy a quiet New Year’s Eve this year.

Stephanie Mika also wanted to be more organized and spend more time reading in 2010.

As people across the globe resolve to do things differently, or start something new altogether, this year, as does every new year, provides the hope of a brighter future. We at The Sidney Sun-Telegraph wish you a safe and happy New Year!
