| SIDNEY – A local face will soon fill the unexpired term of an elected position within the Cheyenne County District Court system. Deanna Volkmer, former Associate Dean of Western Nebraska Community College in Sidney, has been appointed by the Cheyenne County Commissioners to fill the unexpired term of Edie Baumbach, who retired last week, as the Clerk of the District Court. The term expires Jan. 6, 2011, and the position is up for election this year. “I have spent the last 9 months reviewing my career and focusing on the future,” Volkmer said. “One area that I have truly enjoyed in all of my previous positions has been public service.” Volkmer told The Sidney Sun-Telegraph on Thursday that she is planning to run on the ballot to be elected to a four-year term. She will need to file by Feb. 15. “I wouldn’t have gone for the position if I wasn’t intending to run,” she said. In a statement to the Sun-Telegraph, Volkmer said the office of the Clerk of the District Court will “continue to provide the level of respect and service that our constituents have come to expect.” She said Edie set a great example over the years. In November, Volkmer resigned her position of 14 years with WNCC stating to the The Sun-Telegraph that “it just seemed like the thing to do.” Her last day with the college was Dec. 3.
