  • Democratic candidate visits Sidney for coffee, conversation

    Caitlin Sievers|Jan 30, 2014

Dave Domina, U.S. Senate candidate says his heart is in rural Nebraska. Although Domina is running as a Democrat, he thinks being an American and representing the interests of all Nebraskans should come before party politics. "I don't see a party system as having value when it becomes a commanding ideology," Domina said. The way the two parties go about passing laws needs to change, in his opinion. "What we need in the United States Senate is somebody who does not buy into the cliche, 'I can...

  • Tales of a coffee-holic: Not so total recall

    Caitlin Sievers|Jan 30, 2014

Obviously, most of us are pretty reliant on our memories for daily function. Memory guides us to work, helps us complete tasks and look back on our lives. Many of us would probably be surprised to find that the ways in which we remember a special or even a traumatic event in our lives was not how it actually happened at all. While covering this week’s trial and listening to evidence and witness testimony, it’s clear that everyone remembers events differently. Of course, some of the people testifying in the trial could very well be lying. Set...

Benny survived the winter march from Auschwitz to Buchenwald but many of the others did not. Benny was near death when rescued but was nursed back to health by the a... Full story

  • English vs. French

    William H. Benson|Jan 30, 2014

Edgar Allan Poe first saw in print his poem “The Raven” on January 29, 1845. You might recall from high school literature, that the raven visited the poet on a cold December night and would say only one word, “Nevermore,” a word that rhymed with the poet’s deceased lover, the lost Lenore. The poet shouted at the raven, wanted to know why the bird tormented him, and called it a “Prophet, a thing of evil!” The raven replied, “Nevermore.” On January 3 this year, Heather MacDonald, a writ...

The outcome of “Lone Survivor” is never in doubt. Four U.S. Navy Seals drop into a Taliban stronghold targeting a particular leader. They find themselves surrounded by hundreds of well-armed fighters and, as the title suggests, only one man lives to tell the tale. The film is based on a first-hand account by Marcus Luttrell of a failed mission in Afghanistan, played by a captivating Mark Wahlberg. Director Peter Berg (“Friday Night Lights”) reportedly kept the author and veteran handy during production. Too often, expert advice will bog a s...
