    This week's weather has simply been full of surprises. On Tuesday, you could spot many Sidney High School students sporting shorts when the temperatures topped out at 61 degrees. Less than 24 hours later, those same students had Wednesday off from school and a snow shovel in their hands.     KIMBALL – A jury has found Vencil Leo Ash III guilty of first-degree murder in the 2003 death of Ryan Guitron. Monday's verdict came about 7:15 p.m. and ended a weeklong trial. Ash will return to court early next month for sentencing. The end of the trial marks the second time Ash has been found guilty in the case. He was convicted of Guitron's murder by a jury in July 2012. However, the Nebraska Supreme Court overturned the ruling in October 2013, stating that the defense didn't have proper t...

    Howard Atkins, 84 of Sidney, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 3, 2015 at the Sidney Regional Medical Center. Cremation has taken place. There is no visitation at the funeral home and no local services are planned at this time. A memorial service in California will be held at a later date.     Dena L. Wernsman, 52, of Arapahoe, Neb. passed away Sun., Feb. 1, 2015, at Good Samaritan Hospital, in Kearney. She was born on Feb. 5, 1962 in Wray, Colo. to Howard & Helen (Schwaderer) Burton. When Dena was a young girl, her family moved back to the family homestead in the Sand Hills of Nebraska. It was there where Dena learned to mend fence, ride a horse, and her steadfast worth ethic was developed. Dena went to school at Ellsworth Elementary in Ellsworth, Neb.
