    Caitlin Sievers|Feb 5, 2014

Craig Johnson, 48, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole Tuesday in Cheyenne County district court for the Dec. 11, 2011 murder of April Smith. During the trial, prosecutors theorized that Johnson killed Smith because of jealousy over her continued relationship with her husband, Ed Smith, from whom she was separated. “Mr. Johnson is a person that has a very checkered criminal history,” said assistant attorney general Corey O’Brien, who prosecuted the case. In the past, Johnson showed an ongoing tendency for violence,...

With east Sidney expansion projects underway, Sidney’s city council reached an agreement with Wheat Belt on the necessary relocation or transfer of electric distribution lines affected by new construction. As part of the plan, the city would compensate Wheat Belt $5,550 for the removal of an overhead line running alongside Ft. Sidney Rd. • Ten Questions with Megan Mcgown Community Development Director

    Dave Faries|Feb 5, 2014

Megan McGown seems to be everywhere, from city meetings to events downtown. Sidney's Community Development Director joined city hall after seven years serving as director of the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce. Yet her plans entering college were far removed from the world of business recruitment, retention, historic downtown preservation and all the other aspects of her position. No, the sandhills native hoped for a career in law and studied criminal justice. After graduation, however, she...

  • How will your investments affect your child's financial aid prospects?

    Edward Jones|Feb 5, 2014

Even though it’s only February, college financial aid officers are already gathering documents, crunching numbers and otherwise working to determine grants for the school year that starts this coming fall. If you have children you plan on sending to college, how will your own savings and investments affect their chances of getting financial aid? The answer depends not only on how much money you have, but also where you keep it. Most colleges base their aid calculations on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which currently c...

  • Letter to the Editor: School closure policy

    Feb 5, 2014

I want to lodge a complaint against the weather and closure policy that Sidney Public Schools go by: 6:45 is too late in the morning to call off school or late starts. Many kids are up at 6 or earlier and are on their way to school already at 6:45. Parents do not have time to adjust and make better arrangements. I also want to express my total disgust that today when the temp is so low that there is school. What is the official temp when there is a thought to children going out into the cold? Have a care about all the kids walking, too poor to... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor: Understand depression

    Feb 5, 2014

On Friday it was reported that a woman robbed a bank in Sidney. When the case was unsealed, the public was made aware that she had Post Partum Depression. It is rare that a crime can be attributed to just one cause. We do not know everything that led to the robbery. We don’t know about her personal life, her monetary situation, if she was being treated and the list goes on. Why then would they violate her privacy and mention a disease she had. Mental illness is a disease. Diabetes is too. If she was diabetic, maybe she was trying to get m... Full story
