  • Planning Commission approves cell phone tower, plat

    The Sidney Planning Commission on Monday night approved the construction of a cell phone tower. During the 15-minute meeting, commissioners also unanimously passed a motion to subdivide an unplatted tract of land on Illinois Street.     The Cabela's retail store in Sidney presented a check for $4,100 to the Delta Waterfowl Full Limits Chapter of Mitchell for their youth program "First Hunt" as part of Cabela's Outdoor Fund. The fund has a mission to promote conservation and hunting, fishing, camping, boating and other outdoor sporting and recreational activities.     Individuals from Sidney and Scottsbluff will receive planting and landscape awards at the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum awards reception Feb. 26 in Lincoln. Galen Wittrock, assistant manager for the South Platte Natural Resources District, will receive the Johnny Appleseed Award for efforts that embody the spirit of John Chapman – known as “Johnny Appleseed” – through sustained personal involvement in tree-planting in Nebraska.     Sidney residents and Peetz Plateau RE-5 students Alexah Fort and Clara Lichti were honored last weekend at a reception hosted by the Elbridge Gerry Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for their winning essays. Fort was selected as the seventh-grade winner and Lichti was named the eighth-grade winner.     Dear Editor: Do Native Americans have a lock on the definition of “half breed?” A member of the Nebraska Board of Education used this term to describe our President and has received flak for doing so from many sides, including our Governor. The truth of the matter is the President is half white since his mother was Caucasian. The other half is mostly Arab and he is referred to an African mostly because of the color of his skin.     The Shrine Bowl committe announced this morning that Jake Sager and Chance Anglin of Sidney High School have been named to the 57th Annual Shrine Bowl of Nebraska football game. The annual contest, which has been held every year since 1958, raises money to benefit Shriner's Hospitals for Children and Shrine Hospital transportation funds.
