  • Dick Cabela changed the business world and the panhandle

    Caitlin Sievers|Feb 19, 2014

The city of Sidney would not be what it is today without the contributions of Dick Cabela, co-founder of Cabela's, who died at his home on Monday morning. The company has undoubtedly been a major contributor to Sidney's continued success. Cabela's was founded in 1961 when Cabela bought $45 worth of fishing flies to sell in his father's furniture store in Chappell. Customers at the store had little interest in the flies, so Cabela decided to sell them by mail order. Cabela's wife, Mary Cabela...

  • Ten Questions with Ramona Joyce Director of Cheyenne County Visitor's Center

    Dave Faries|Feb 19, 2014

Ramona Joyce has been telling people where to go for nine years. At least that's how long she has served as director of the Cheyenne County Visitor's Center, perched atop the hill across from Cabela's retail store. Although born in Montana and a longtime resident of the Denver area, Joyce considers Sidney home. She moved to town in 1991, after all, and spent many years with Nienhueser Construction before taking over at the visitors center. 1. What question do you hear most often? 'How do I get...

  • Saving is good...But it's not investing

    Edward Jones|Feb 19, 2014

It’s a good thing to have some savings. When you put the money in a low-risk account, you can be pretty sure it will be readily available when you need it. Nonetheless, “saving” is not “investing” — and knowing the difference could pay off for you far into the future. Think about it this way: Saving is for today, while investing is for tomorrow. You need your savings to pay for your daily expenses, such as groceries, and your monthly bills — mortgage, utilities, and so on. In fact, you might even want your savings to include an emergency fun...

  • Warriors win ugly, head to sub-district finals

    Dave Faries|Feb 19, 2014

The Warriors expected to knock off Banner County-and it showed. On paper, Leyton pounded the Wildcats in the sub-district opener Tuesday night in Gering, coming away with a 44-18 win. But it was hardly their usual sharp performance, at least in the beginning. "We were way too relaxed," senior point guard Kelsey Waite explained. In the first quarter the Warriors failed to take advantage of four Banner County turnovers. When the girls in blue presented them with a traveling turnover, Leyton handed...

  • Late Storm surge drowns Morrill

    Stephen McKay|Feb 19, 2014

Fans didn't need a scoreboard to tell the winner of Tuesday night's sub-district battle between Creek Valley and Morrill. They just needed to catch the broad smiles on the faces of Storm seniors Summer Mueller and Jerry Straber as they emerged from the post-game locker room. But what their expressions didn't reveal was how difficult a road they had just traveled. It took 30:11 for No. 2 Creek Valley to gain their first lead of the game. From that point on, the Storm played their best...

  • Strong start not enough for Coyotes

    Stephen McKay|Feb 19, 2014

Facing the big and talented No. 1 seed Hemingford was a tough way to start post season play. Though Potter-Dix took it to the Bobcats early, Hemingford soon seized control and completed a 65-23 win in the sub-district semifinals on Tuesday night in Mitchell. The Bobcats will face No. 2 Creek Valley on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. in the sub-district final at the same venue. Though the Coyotes ended their season with a record of 10-11, four seniors--Tiffany Lewis, Taylor Juelfs, Morgan Wolff and L...
