    Caitlin Sievers|Feb 21, 2014

The city of Sidney seeks to gain additional right of way from property owners along the Toledo St. extension as well as Greenwood Rd. for roadwork planned on both streets during this year’s construction season. Last week, city manager Gary Person sent a letter to property owners along the area planned for reconstruction to ask for more right of way along the routes. “The street improvement district is being formed and assessed as a general benefit to the entire community and NOT just directly to each adjacent property owner,” the letter state...

  • Across the Fence: Prelude to Battle

    M. Timothy Nolting|Feb 21, 2014

Not many miles east of the Nebraska-Wyoming border, where the North Platte River crosses that boundary, a tiny Wyoming-born tributary takes a sharp turn north in the final leg of its eastward journey. The water that flows through this draw, named Horse Creek, empties into the Platte and joins with the waters of that wide and shallow river until it reaches the waters of the Missouri. It was in this area on September 17, 1851 that the Fort Laramie Treaty was signed. The gathering of more than...

  • Life and Your Soul

Rev. Thomas Hyde, First United Methodist, Sidney|Feb 21, 2014

I spend a lot of my time helping people in the midst of a crisis. Life is not easy, and we cope with disease, accidents, bad weather, and relationships that have gone bad. You can add to the list from your own experience, or the experiences of people you love. I recently was reminded of the story of a man named Horatio Spafford. Wikipedia tells his story. He was a successful lawyer and investor in Chicago in the 1870s. He had a wife and four beautiful daughters. Life was good! In 1871 things began to go bad. The Chicago fire of 1871 ruined him....

    Stephen McKay|Feb 21, 2014

Sidney's Michael Muggli remains in the hunt for a medal at the 2014 NSAA State Wrestling Championships in Omaha's CenturyLink Center. The Sidney 145 lb. competitor defeated Chase Nelson of Beatrice 7-3 on Friday morning to move on in his bid for third place. If he wins one more match he will be at least assured of a medal. Shortly after eliminating Nelson, he quickly moved to an adjacent match to watch Cory Washburn of Ashland-Greenland eliminate Brad Lenz of Blair 4-1. Muggli and Washburn will...

  • Warriors battle, fall short

    Dave Faries|Feb 21, 2014

Six points. The margin of Garden County's 43-37 win over Leyton in Thursday night's sub-district title game represented a gap the Warriors could not span, no matter how much heart, grit and hustle they put into the task. It was a margin the Eagles established in the first half, when they outscored the top seeded Warriors by 5 points in the opening quarter and one more in the second. Otherwise, the two sides matched up evenly, putting up identical numbers after the halftime break. Leyton head...

  • Straber, Mueller lead Storm in near upset

    Feb 21, 2014

Creek Valley ran with the top seed, 20-3 Hemingford Bobcats for most of the way on Thursday night, before falling 72-62 in the sub-district title game at Mitchell. In fact, the Storm controlled things in the early going, as Jerry Straber put up double digit numbers by half time on her way to a 28-point night. But the second and fourth quarters determined the final outcome. Although Creek Valley poured it on the the second period for 20 points, the Bobcats responded in even more manic terms, hitting for 25. Hemingford outscored the Storm 21-14... Full story
