  • Sales tax receipts may exceed projections

    Caitlin Sievers|Apr 10, 2014

City staff are confidant that the half cent sales tax, which began collection in July 2013, will garner significantly more in funds this year than expected. Now that the first six months of the tax collection have been reported, the total funds in city accounts from the tax equal around $476,000, even though the city had to pay out a significant refund one month. “It clearly shows that our optimism is founded,” said city manager Gary Person at Tuesday’s city council meeting. To add to this, the city expects excellent revenue from the tax...

  • Addiction

    William H. Benson, Columnist|Apr 10, 2014

Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, Robert Downey, Jr., Britney Spears, the late Whitney Houston, and countless numbers of other celebrities have gone through rehab at least once, and each experienced far less than a full cure. The actor Danny Bonaduce—the red-headed middle son on The Partridge Family—said, “They charged me more than $40,000 for my stay, and I drank on the way home.” Treatment centers, such as Betty Ford, Sierra Tucson, and Promises Malibu, offer hope to an individual who...

  • Tales of a coffee-holic: Two side and reality

    Caitlin Sievers|Apr 10, 2014

It seems that when it comes to many social issues those on both side of the aisle do nothing but scream at one another and decide they are effectively deaf to any opinions different from their own. Personally, I really do sympathize with both sides of the abortion debate. I don’t understand how any rational person who tries to look at the situation from outside his or her own emotions could lack at least some empathy for either stance. No matter what your feelings on abortion, the only way to solve any problem is to analyze all the factors...

  • Letter to the Editor: Butt Out

    Apr 10, 2014

Now that the golf course is open for play the golfers are out for enjoyment of the outdoors and for healthy exercise. However, they are also throwing cigarette butts all over the fairways.  This appears to be counterproductive, healthy exercise and smoking. I am not aware that tobacco has any beneficial quality as fertilizer. Do you suppose that they might consider giving up smoking while golfing? It would certainly be beneficial for all concerned. How about it guys? C.J. Cornelius Sidney... Full story

  • Ten Questions with Doris Jensen Director, Sidney Public Library

    Dave Faries|Apr 10, 2014

For the past eight years, Doris Jensen has served the city as director of the public library. But she has been devoted to the facility since she began working at the location some 24 years ago. Her dedication is hardly surprising. She earned a minor in library science from Chadron State College to go along with a degree in elementary education. That degree led to a teaching position in Binkelman before she moved to Sidney, where Jensen taught for 17 years at Sing and Say, a private pre-school....

  • Talking Sports: A change in the calendar

    Stephen McKay|Apr 10, 2014

Happy New Year. Not exactly. Not according to the Gregorian calendar anyway. Or the Chinese calendar. I think it’s the Year of the Horse and we’re now in the year 2565. As for the Jewish New Year, that’s not until Sept. 25-26, which will mark the beginning of the year 5775. Kind of reminds me of an old song by Zager and Evans. They had a one-hit-wonder called “In the Year 2525.” They’re from Lincoln, by the way. Bottom line is everybody can have their own calendar, and I have mine. At least for the purposes of this space. It was jus...

  • Community Center fundraiser raises $62,000

    Caitlin Sievers|Apr 10, 2014

Despite a smaller than usual turnout, the Cheyenne County Community Center's annual fundraiser still managed to net the center around $62,000 in contributions. "Overall, I was very pleased with how the fundraiser went," said Mike Namuth, the center's director. "It just goes to show, again everyone's willingness to support this facility on an annual basis and whenever needed." The fundraiser, which took place April 5 at Buffalo Point, featured a silent auction, social hour, recognition for the...
