The types of companies that will be allowed to set up shop in the new Sidney Business Park was discussed this week. On Monday night, Sidney City Manger Gary Person told the Planning Commission a company has expressed interest in developing a lot in the new development. However, because the company would conduct retail operations, it is not currently permitted. The business park is only zoned for heavy industrial uses. Peetz Cub Scout Pack #36 held its Blue and Gold Awards ceremony on last week at the Peetz Community Church. An "Outing in Scouting" was the theme for the night as the scouts helped construct a camping scene. A Sidney Police Department investigation in September 2013 that led to the arrests of a Sidney man and two Sterling, Colo., women on suspicion of taking and sending sexually explicit photographs of young children in their care has resulted in two separate plea agreements. Earlier this month, Brandee Christensen, 31, pleaded guilty to one count of attempted violation of visual depiction of sexually explicit conduct, a Class II felony. CHAPPELL – The Chappell City Council welcomed a new member this week. Dan Riley, who was recently appointed as a councilor, was administered the oath of office at the beginning of the council meeting on Monday night by city attorney Joel Jay. Riley was nominated to fill a vacancy opened after Rich Graeff resigned from the council last month. Councilors approved Graeff’s resignation, with regret, at the April 20 City Council meeting. The Chad Nienhueser Memorial Scholarship is given to area high school students who will pursue a college education and have demonstrated leadership skills. Chad was a Sidney native majoring in civin engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City. This year's scholarship goes to Raine Gartner, Tanner Nienhueser and Joacob Peterson, all graduating seniors at Sidney High School. GERING – The Scotts Bluff National Monument will expand hours for the summer beginning this Saturday. To better serve visitors, the summer hours at the monument will be 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Summit Road will be open for uphill traffic from 8 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. and the grounds will be open sunrise to sunset. Dear Editor: The Obama administration finally listened to our military leaders, and they are now planning on leaving 9,800 troops in Afghanistan through 2016 and probably beyond. Originally they were going to draw down to 5,500 troops. The Taliban continues to pose a threat in Afghanistan and ISIS could rear its ugly head. Our troops could be needed to quash enemy attacks in the region. Compared to our prior strength of 100,000 troops, the U.S. troops remaining in Afghanistan might not have the numerical strength to counter the Taliban... Full story
Despite mostly ideal playing conditions at Hillside Golf Course, scores were generally high as the Sidney High School boys golf team missed qualifying for state by seven strokes with a fourth-place finish at the District B-4 tournament on Monday. Creek Valley Storm golfer Brett Godfrey carded an 86 – his best score of the season – at the Oregon Trail Golf Course in Sutherland to qualify for the state tournament as an individual.
