    Just in time for warm weather, the pond at Sidney's Legion Park is officially stocked with 380 fish in preparation for Kid's Fishing Day on Saturday. The event will be held from 8:30-11 a.m. and is open to children ages 12 and younger. Participants should bring their own rods and reels, but some will be available to borrow. There is no entry fee.   • Defense seeks new trial in Assad case

    A new trial for Jason Assad, the Sidney man convicted in April of five felony charges including first-degree false imprisonment, is being sought by his attorney. On April 27, 10 days after a Cheyenne County jury found Assad guilty, his counsel, Steven Elmshaeuser, filed a motion on behalf of his client for a new trial. Assad was initially scheduled to be sentenced on Friday.     The City of Sidney has filled its economic development director position with a person with more than 20 years of experience. Tina Hochwender will take over the position effective June 15. Hochwender brings experience in economic, community and business development in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and Missouri. Most recently, she has spent the past 15 years with the City of Council Bluffs, Iowa , as its community development project coordinator.     At the 2015 NSAA State Track and Field Championships in Omaha last weekend, I watched the final event from the west hill at Burke Stadium. My vantage point for the race was perfect for watching, and Sidney High's Donna Wiedeburg had us covered for photos. The race was close from start-to-finish, but when Hunter Secrest passed the leader down the stretch in the third leg, I began to think Sidney could win a state championship.     The Sidney American Legion baseball teams finally held their home opener at Legion Park Wednesday night after twice being postponed by rain last weekend. The juniors (2-0) opened the doubleheader with a 7-1 win over Hershland while the seniors (1-1) lost a tight contest 6-5. Jake Heeren, who pitched the final three innings in relief of starter Keaton Wakefield in the nightcap, was the hard-luck loser for the seniors.
