    City worker saves local children By: Hannah Van Ree Heroic action by Parks Superintendent Tom Von Seggern and four other city employees, very possibly saved the life of two brothers in January of this year. On the afternoon of Jan. 4 the two boys fell through the ice and into the pond at Legion Park, according to information from then Police Chief Mike Brown.     Baseball There are 144 American Legion senior teams in Nebraska and Sidney found itself among the final few in its chase for a state championship. This perspective notwithstanding, Post 17’s season came to halt in the end of July as it suffered its second loss in the state’s double-elimination tournament at Gering’s Oregon Trail Park. The end came after 28 wins, heart stopping victories, miraculous comebacks and even a few disappointing losses.   • Neb. Game and Parks seeks hunting gear donations

    LINCOLN (AP) — The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is accepting donations of new and used hunting gear and clothing. The donations will go to the commission's mentored youth hunting program. Organizers say many youths who participate don't have access to appropriate clothing and gear. The commission is requesting camouflaged and blaze orange hunting gear.     Shirley L. Minshall, 85 of Sidney, passed away Friday morning, December 27, 2013 at the Sidney Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 3rd in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Hyde officiating. Services will conclude at the church with cremation to follow. Inurnment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. Friends may stop at the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel on Thursday from 1 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in care of the family.     Shirley Margaret Schmit 1926 to 2013 Shirley M. (Meyer) Schmit, 87, of Randolph, Neb. died Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Colonial Manor in Randolph. Shirley Margaret (Meyer) Schmit, daughter of John and Viola (Colling) Meyer was born May 23, 1926, on the family farm. She graduated from St. Frances School in 1944.
