Raiders finally get win against Gering, 60-55

GERING — The third time was the charm Friday night for Sidney High School’s boys basketball team.

After losing twice to Western Conference rival Gering in tournament games, the Red Raiders hit the road Friday night and knocked off the Bulldogs 60-55.

“I thought we perhaps played our best all-around game so far,” SHS coach Erik Kohl said. “We hit some big shots early, got a big lead and played strong defense.”

Lane Harvey and Paxton Ehler had the hot hands early. Harvey hit two 3-pointers right off the bat, good for a 6-0 Raiders lead, and SHS (6-4) never looked back.

Ehler ended the first period by scoring on a half-court heave, good for a trey and a 17-11 Sidney lead.

Ehler spiked two more 3-pointers to start the second quarter, and SHS found itself ahead 23-11.

Gering (7-5) cut the deficit to 27-25 late in the first half, but Sidney closed things out with a 10-0 run. Sam Arterburn, Ehler and Casey Mabey scored baskets before Hunter Vowers buried a 3-pointer and Mabey cashed inside to give Sidney a 37-25 halftime advantage.

Sidney still held that 12-point advantage, 36-24, at the third stop, and then extended the margin to 14 points early in the fourth frame when Logan Lewis followed up a Mabey misfire.

Gering did close the gap to five points twice, on 3-pointers from Zac Bibb and Christian Groskoph, but Sidney did just enough at the free-throw line to hold sway.

Harvey was 4 for 4 down the stretch at the line, and Arterburn hit a pair in the final two minutes.

Ehler, who fouled out, led the way for Sidney with 15 points. Harvey added 14, Mabey 12.

SHS will get a stern test this evening when McCook comes calling for a 6 p.m. contest at Cabela’s Activity Center.
