Jaycees holding youth basketball competition

The Sidney Jaycees are holding another event aimed at community involvement and children’s personal growth.

They are holding a Super Shooters Youth Basketball Competition this Saturday at the Cheyenne County Community Center. The competition starts at 9 a.m., with registration occurring before 9 upon competitors’ arrival.

The individual timed basketball competition is open to any boy or girl age 6 to 13.

Competitors are split up into four age groups to compete against however, according to Amber Talich, President of the Sidney Jaycees Chapter.

During the competition 6-yr-olds and 7-yr-olds will be paired up, 8 and 9-yr-olds, 10 and 11-yr-olds and 12 and 13-yr-olds will also compete against each other.

The competition is free for participants and supports a “getting active” mentality.

Participants will shoot from five different spots on the court and then end the round with a lay-up. Each child has one minute to shoot from the five different areas.

Talich said that scoring will be based on time as well as accuracy and that the competitors will have two rounds, with their best round being the one that is considered in their final score.

“They try and make as many baskets as they can and then some bonus points may also be awarded,” said Talich.

The top scorer out of each of the combined age brackets for both boys and girls will be pronounced winners and move on to the state shooting competition.

The Jaycees president said that the competition used to be held internationally among different Jaycee groups but has now become a state competition. Nebraska’s state competition this year will be held in Sidney at the community center on March 23.

“I think it gives our youth an opportunity to compete not only locally but at the state level against kids their own age for awards and statewide recognition,” said Talich. “But most importantly it is for the kids to have fun.”
