Cabela's employees help prep for Kid's Fishing Day

Plenty of vigorous fish have been placed into their new home in the pond at Sidney’s Legion Park on Wednesday in preparation for Kids’ Fishing Day this Saturday, June 1.

A team of six Cabela’s employees volunteered to help stock the pond with 475 trout, bluegill, perch and catfish trucked over by Brian Hahle with Pleasant Valley Fish Farm of McCook. The supplement to the pond will give kids a better chance of making their first big catch.

Some kids may reel in more than just supper—nine of the new fish have been specially tagged with color-coded markers which, if caught, will entitle the young angler to a Cabela’s gift card. This year, the prize amounts range from $25 to the grand prize of $100, depending on the color of the tag.

The event will be held from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. and is open to children 12 years and younger. Participants should bring their own rods and reels, but some will be available to borrow. Experienced volunteers will be present to educate kids and give hands-on training in the arts of casting, untangling fishing line, and putting a worm on the hook. Bait and free refreshments will be provided, and participants will have numerous chances to win goodie bags and prizes.

“No Fishing” signs have been posted along the perimeter of the pond so the event won’t be compromised. The general public is asked not to fish at the pond until after the event is completed at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Kids’ Fishing Day offers children and their families a chance to spend some quality moments outside the house and away from the television. “It builds excitement for kids,” said Connie Carrillo, coordinator of the event and Marketing Manager for Cabela’s retail store in Sidney. “We want everyone to have that outdoor experience.”
