Students compete for shot at the National Spelling Bee

For the second consecutive year, Sidney's Salena Petluri took top honors in the Cheyenne County Spelling Bee. She will go on to compete in the Midwest Spelling Bee in Omaha, with a chance to represent Nebraska in the national event.

The National Spelling Bee is held in Washington, DC and featured on television.

The Cheyenne County event was more low key, yet still intense for the 24 competitors. Students from Sidney--Central, West and the Middle School--Leyton and Potter-Dix earned the right to take the stage at West Elementary, before four judges and an audience of parents.

After several rounds, the number was whittled to four: Petluri, Shawn Waggoner of Potter-Dix, Ethan Eckhardt from Leyton and Ethan Shea, a student at Sidney's Central Elementary.

Petluri, the champion, attends 6th grade at West Elementary in Sidney.
