Muggli wins opening match at state

At precisely 9:30 a.m., Omaha time, on Thursday morning 10 mats were whistled into action as the 2014 NSAA State Wrestling Championships got underway at CenturyLink Center.

Just about 90 minutes after the mats came alive Sidney's Michael Muggli was called to Mat No. 1 where he ultimately defteated Tyler Berner of Syracuse in overtime 4-2. Muggli wrestles in Class B at 145 lbs.

"It doesn't get any easier," said Raiders Head Coach John Ganser. "This kid he will see in the next round is about as tough as it gets."

The win earns Muggli (35-8) a date with Vince Thatcher of Crete later on Thursday in the quarterfinal round. Thatcher, who improved his record to 31-0, pinned his opponent Aaron Musilek shortly before Muggli advanced.

Muggli was the first to score with a two-point reversal in the second period. Muggli took his advantage into the third where Berner turned the tables on Muggli with a reversal of his own. With 46 seconds left in the overtime period, Muggli earned two takedown points for the sudden victory.

Regardless of whether Muggli wins or not on Thursday afternoon he will have at least one match on Friday. A win would put him in the semifinals which begin at 5 p.m. CST for all classes.

Should Muggli be defeated he would face an opponent in a first-round consolation match Friday morning sometime after 9:30 p.m. CST.

Results are continiously updated on the NSAA website.
