Ten Questions with Randy Brown, Sports Announcer KSID Radio

Randy Brown is the voice of Sidney High School sports. When the Raiders score a touchdown or hit a three pointer, it is to his cadence.

Brown's picturesque calls have earned him both praise and a large following. And he has been at it since 1982, when a friend in broadcasting asked him to help out on the air.

The KSID personality grew up on a Sidney area farm. But he is well versed in Red Raiders sports, having participated in football, basketball and track in his high school days.

1. The high school season is winding down. Looking back, do you have a favorite moment?

[Pause]. I gotta stop and think here. It's all been kinda fun. Everything has been fun and competitive. But making the playoffs in football and winning a game--it's been a long time.

2. Which school has the best press facility? Besides Sidney, of course.

Depending upon the sport--I would have to say in football Gering or Lexington. Basketball is a little harder. North Platte is really nice. It's like Cabela's Athletic Facility where you're behind the table. WNCC is nice because it's courtside.

3. You've probably worked under some pretty tough conditions, too.

I did a playoff game in Dalton. It was zero degrees and we were on the roof. There were several radio stations there, so we were outside. That was the worst.

4. If not calling Sidney games ...?

I always wanted to do another level. I would love to do college games. I've done a lot of WNCC stuff over the years--men's and women's basketball, baseball and the first volleyball game.

5. Do announcers go back and study their game tapes?

Yes. Sometimes you go back and listen and it was a game you felt like you were behind the whole time and it turns out it's not that bad. The next time you thought you had a good game and it's not as good as you thought. You find out how many times you use a phrase. It's good to go back and listen.

6. Did you have a favorite announcer growing up?

No, not really. I never really thought about it.

7. Then what got you started?

A friend asked me to help out with some basketball games and one thing led to another.

8. Ever sneak in and change Dave Collins' copy?

No. Never done that. You never know, though [Laughs]. No, you don't mess with someone's creation.

9. In the car: sports or music?

It depends on the time. If there's a game on I'll listen. Otherwise it's music.

10. Do you think you'll ever get tired of this?

No, not really. Being around the kids and the coaches--we have good kids. Sometimes you hate to see them graduate and go on. It's been fun.
