Sidney wrestling looks to continue hot start in Gordon

After winning its first dual match of the season and then taking fourth place among 15 teams in the Cozad Invite last week, the Sidney High wrestling team will carry momentum into the Gordon-Rushville Invite on Saturday.

The first varsity match is slated for 12:30 p.m in Gordon.

Head coach Ganser believes his team is prepared and will perform at a high level.

"We can compete very well, as evidenced from what we did last week (in the Cozad Invite)," Ganser said. "There will be 14 total teams there (at the Gordon-Rushville Invite), and we think we can be right in the mix."

Several Sidney wrestlers will be looking to medal for the second time already this season. At Cozad, freshman Kaden Vowers came in second place at 106-pounds. Sophomore Jack Feddersen took fourth place at 126.

Freshman Derek Robb won the 138-pound class, as he defeated Alliance's D.J. Weare 4-2 in the finals. Senior Michael Muggli (145) took home third. Fellow senior Zach Borges (160) came in fifth, junior Brandon Lulf (195) took fourth and junior heavyweight Dominic Beyer (285) finished second.

Ganser said that his wrestlers medaling in the season's opening events is a huge confidence booster going forward.

"You always want to get off to a good start," Ganser said. "Get a good record established so your seed is better. Wrestling is such a roller coaster sport, even within an hour. You can lose a match and then have to come right back and win the next one. That's the learning and growing up part of it."

Despite all that success in the team's opening tournament, Ganser said there were some things his guys needed to work on fundamentally to improve for the Gordon-Rushville Invite.

"We need to be working closer to opponents and work more on setting up our shots," Ganser said.

Ganser said that his team emphasized improving in those areas this week and practice. While the team did make strides, it's a learning process that will take time as the season progresses.

"We've made the point (in practice)," Ganser said. "Now we just need to repeat it.

For Saturday, Ganser will send out a varsity lineup of Vowers (106), Colton Peckham (113), Feddersen (126), Bret Jaggers (132), Robb (138), Muggli (145), Ryan Nieto (152), Borges (160), Patric Hayes (170), Lulf (195), Kane Taylor (220) and Beyer (285).

The 120-pound and 182-pound spots will be open for Sidney.
