Preschool gets 'Wild about Christmas' with performance

Santa came to town, visiting a local preschool on Friday after their Christmas performance.

Children age 3 to 4 participated in singing songs for their parents. Made evident by a few nervous tears and many excited smiles, this was one of the first times performing in front of an audience for group of preschoolers.

The preschool Christmas program is an annual tradition in "Wild About Preschool," the preschool Janeal Christian has been teaching from her home for seven years. She is a certified preschool teacher through Chadron State College, and the mother of seven children.

"I love being able to send my child to preschool where they are being cared for the way I would care for them," says Jessica Russell, who is currently sending her second child to Wild About Preschool. "Deciding to send our younger daughter to Jeneal was a no brainer. Our first daughter went into school heads shoulders above her classmates."

Russell considers the preschool teacher part of the family.

Christian is serious about her students' academic progress. She said her favorite part about teaching preschool is seeing success in her students.

"We may go over a new concept a few times and one day the light goes on, and they get it," she said.

Teaching social skills is important for Christian, but her preschool curriculum includes handwriting, spelling, reading, and a monthly field trip. Field trips have included visits to local farms, the fire department, the post office, as well as having lunch at Central Elementary, where the preschoolers will eventually attend kindergarten.

The program involved several Christmas songs, jingling bells, story time, a gift exchange, and a visit from Santa Clause. Sitting on his lap, the students told Santa what they wanted for Christmas. After watching four students ask for their Christmas wish and come away with bubbles, 4-year-old Nola Andersen figured out how to walk away from Santa without disappointment.

"What would you like for Christmas, Nola?" "Bubbles," she responded happily.

Parents, grandparents, and siblings were in attendance at the performance.
