Lady Raiders fall to Bearcats on road

The first blow for District B-6 supremacy went to the Scottsbluff Lady Bearcats as they rode their hot shooting to a 68-57 win over the Sidney Lady Raiders in Scottsbluff on Friday night.

The Raiders suffered their first district loss (9-6, 4-1) and had their five-game winning streak snapped while the Bearcats have won all six of their district contests. Oddly enough, Scottsbluff has lost all of its non-district games for a season record of 6-6.

Despite a career scoring night by sophomore Annalise Lecher (15 points), the Raiders fell victim to a hot shooting night by Scottsbluff. Hottest of all the Bearcats’ shooters was Zoe Holscher who scored a game high 28 points including 18 in the first quarter.

As a team Scottsbluff scored 21 points over the first eight minutes. Following Holscher’s fast start, the Radiers began to play closer attention to her. Holscher’s second quarter production amounted to a three pointer while in the second half she was relegated to scoring all her points from the foul line.

“It was a game where they shot really well and we didn’t,” said Raiders head coach Tyler Shaw. “We got them in foul trouble but we couldn’t take advantage.”

Though Sidney fell beind by seven points after the first frame, it narrowed the gap to one (28-27) at the half. Scottbluff’s hot shooting, however, continued into the second half.

The Raiders did manage to narrow the gap to one-point in the fourth quarter before the Bearcats finished the contest on an impressive 12-2 run.

“We battled back a few times to close the gap but we couldn’t take the lead,” said Shaw. “We hope to have a better defensive outing next time.”

The next time the Raiders and Bearcats meet will be in Sidney on Feb. 7.

In addition to Lecher’s 15, Emily Mahr contributed 11 points and Maddi Porter eight. Savanna Rosenbaum and Kelsey Knight each finished with seven.

Sidney has another tough challenge when they head north on Friday to take on the Chadron Cardinals (12-3). Despite the Cardinals strong record, the Raiders handed them one of their few losses back on Dec. 5 in Sidney, 38-31.
