Sidney freshmen roll to season-ending title

ALLIANCE – The Sidney High School freshman boys' basketball team wrapped up an undefeated season on Thursday night, beating Gering 76-56 in the championship game of the week-long freshman tournament at Alliance Middle School.

The Red Raiders finished the year 14-0. The majarity of the players on the team also won the 8th-grade tournament title and the 7th-grade championship the year before. In fact, in those three seasons the team has only lost one game.

On Thursday, Jake Burke led the way for the Red Raiders with 19 points. Teammate Tyler Bergstrom added 13 points.

All 12 players on the Raiders' team scored.

Sidney pulled out to a 30-15 lead during a fast-paced opening quarter. Burke contribributed 14 points in that opening stanza – including knocking down four 3-pointers.

The Raiders led 49-26 at the intermission. Micth Porter helped extend the Sidney lead with 8 points in the second quarter. He finished with 11 in the game.

After three quarters, Sidney had opened up a 61-41 advantage. In the final quarter the teams battled to a 15-15 stalemate.

Connor Dormann had 7 points for Sidney, while Josh Schaub and Jon Smith added 5 points each. Cole Westfall and Jeremy Lawler had 4 points apiece, with Braydon Cortney and Connor Langrell chipping in 3 and 2 points, respectively.

The team was coached by Bryan Schoening.
