Jensen checks out as longtime library director

Sidney Public Library Director Doris Jensen celebrated her last day at the library with friends, community members and coworkers on Wednesday afternoon.

Jensen has served the city as director of the public library for more than eight years and has been devoted to Sidney's library for 25 years.

Her passion for books and being a part of the library environment isn't surprising as she earned a minor in library science from Chadron State College to go along with a degree in elementary education. She began teaching in Benkleman, Neb., before she moved to Sidney.

Jensen began working at the library in the evenings as a second job, and was then hired as the book mobile drive, adult services and interlibrary loan.

"The best thing about this job has been the people," Jensen said. "Working with the patrons of the library and the public has been very rewarding."

Her peers as well as Richard Miller, of the Nebraska Library Commission in Lincoln, and Eric Green, Western Library System Coordinator of Scottsbluff, honored her for her service and dedication to the library.

"I plan on enjoying my retirement by doing whatever I want," Jensen said while laughing. "I plan on doing a lot of reading."
