Lodgepole Village Council discusses water treatment options

LODGEPOLE – Village councilors in Lodgepole discussed a possible water treatment option for town residents on Monday night..

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is requiring towns throughout the state to implement safeguards against potential arsenic contamination in drinking water.

Lodgepole has until May to complete a preliminary engineering report on ways to ensure safe drinking water for residents. Once the report is approved, the community will have one year to file a final implementation plan schedule.

While nothing was decided upon during the meeting, councilors discussed looking into stand-alone units that could be distributed to individual households to filter water as opposed to a major infrastructure project.

Council chairman Alan Runge said another small, Nebraska town is also examining the devices.

"They're for communities that can't afford the million-dollar projects," he said.

Vice chairman R.J. Savely said he thought the community should explore the units.

The council asked village clerk Tammy Sherman to see if the manufacturer could visit a Lodgepole council meeting.

"I don't think it'd hurt to have them come make a presentation," Runge said. "The way it sounds, they're looking to debut this technology in Nebraska."

Councilors also approved renting a dumpster for the use of the residents during spring cleaning.

The dumpster will be delivered May 9. Once it is filled, it will be removed and returned empty at least once. A third dumpster remains an option if needed, according to the resolution.

Near the end of the 35-minute meeting, Sherman discussed a request to use the village's athletic fields for a softball tournament.

The tournament would be used as a fundraiser for a local group seeking to raise money for the Fourth of July fireworks display.

"I don't have a problem with them using the field," Runge said.

He asked that the group organizing the tournament make a presentation at the May council meeting to discuss the details.

The next Lodgepole Village Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 4, at 7 p.m. at the village office.
