Red Raider golfers take 8th in Hastings

The Sidney High boys’ golf team teed it up at Lockland Country Coub in the Hastings Invite on Thursday and finished eighth among the 10 teams competing.

Kearney won the event by a comfortable margin with 303 strokes, while Grand Island and McCook tied for second at 318. The Red Raiders’ total was 352.

“I just feel in my gut we have the talent to compete with any team in our district, but we’re just very inconsistent,” said Raiders head coach Chuck Christensen. “We have to work on our short game and mental game and that’s all on me.”

Sidney’s best score at the Lockland Country Club in Hastings was turned in by Brady Radcliffe with an 83. Nate Dvorak, who was playing No. 1, struggled to a 90 as did Ryan Birner at No. 2. Connor Dormann finished with an 89, while Elliot Jones scored 91.

“I think there’s been a little curse on our No. 1 player so far this season,” Christensen said.

The “curse” as Christensen jokingly referred to it, is that his No. 1 golfer at each meet has not been at his best. Radcliffe, Garrett Wamsley and Dvorak have all struggled from the top spot this season. Wamsley did not make the trip to Hastings due to illness.

“I expect good things from Garrett,” Christensen said. “With all the hard work he’s put in this spring, last summer and last season I know he can help us a lot. We’ll need him back and I expect him to qualify for the Gothenburg meet.”

The Raiders will have a busy end of the month with four tournaments between April 21-April 30. Sidney will open that stretch at Gothenburg next Tuesday with matches at Alliance, Scottsbluff and Chadron to follow.

The Raiders have also added a home match to their schedule on May 4. They will host a quad meet at Hillside Golf Course that is scheduled to tee off at noon.
